About
In 2377, Starfleet discovered an artificial wormhole constructed by the ancient and extinct Iconian race. With one entrance in the outskirts of the Federation and the other deep in the Delta Quadrant, the Gate became the most strategically important phenomenon since the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole. Hastily, Starfleet built Starbases at either end of the stable wormhole—Starbase 911 at Union Colony in the Alpha Quadrant, and Starbase 900 in the Delta. Command then reassigned an obscure diplomatic force called Task Force 38 and charged it with the defense and exploration of Starfleet interests in the D.Q. For the next three years, no matter what ship was the official flagship, the Sovereign-class U.S.S. Excelsior-C flew at TF38’s head.
In 2380, Command mothballed the Excelsior, citing a 'breakdown in the command structure.' One year later, the Borg appeared at Starbase 900, destroyed it, and drove Starfleet out of the Delta Quadrant. The Excelsior never saw action during the campaign. Nor was it on the front line when Task Force 38 returned to the Delta Quadrant only to find the Borg gone and a region ripe for reconstruction. It was only as TF38's exploration phase went once again into full swing that Excelsior veterans at the highest echelons of Starfleet saw to her reactivation. In December 2382, the Excelsior was assigned to active service under a new captain. The ship was unproven, nearly forgotten... but ready to reclaim its place as a trailblazer and a leader.
The Excelsior has returned.
Behind the scenes, Star Trek: Excelsior is an audio drama set in the universe described above. We're also the first Star Trek fan production based--quite faithfully--on the adventures of a sister roleplaying game, the U.S.S. Excelsior out of Bravo Fleet. This form of storytelling, with its long episodic arcs, is certainly an experiment, but we’re confident that, with some patience and an appreciation for long-form Star Trek storytelling, you’ll enjoy what we came up with.
Characters
Star Trek: Excelsior has been noted for its unusually large cast, particularly for an audio show. To that end, we've recently killed quite a few people, but we also thought it might help if you got to know the main characters a little better. If you read them, the surviving expendables thank you for saving their fictional lives.
Captain Rachel Cortez, Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Commander Alcar Dovan, First Officer
Lieutenant J.G. Alecz Lorhrok, Chief Engineer
Lieutenant J.G. Alex Rol, Special Operations [in progress]
Lieutenant Asuka Yubari, Intelligence Attaché
Synopsis
I was listening to one of the other popular Trek audio dramas the other day when I realized that had, since the last episode, completely forgotten much of what was going on. When they went back and started referencing events from five or six episodes ago, I found myself digging back several months into the archives just to figure out what the characters were talking about. And so--even though, starting with "Down the Rabbit Hole," we will feature a brief recap at the start of each episode--I give you Star Trek: Excelsior's answer to the dilemma:
